The Napo Wildlife Center is a uniquely authentic lodge located on over 82 square miles of pristine Amazon Rainforest within the Yasuni National Park. Yasuni – the local communities refer to it as “sacred land.”

It is easy to understand why…Yasuni National Park is one of the most biologically diverse areas on our planet and has been declared a world biosphere reserve by UNESCO.

Scientists have discovered 655 species of trees within one hectare of land (more than the total number of trees recorded in US and Canada combined), some 4,000-plant species, 173 species of mammals and 610 bird species live inside the Park. “It contains more documented insect species than any other forest in the world, and is among the most diverse forests in the world for different species of birds, bats, amphibians, epiphytes, and lianas. Yasuní is critical habitat to 23 globally threatened mammal species, including the Giant otter, the Amazonian manatee, Pink river dolphin, Giant anteater, and Amazonian tapir.

And Napo Wildlife Center is unlike any other Amazon lodge in the region. It was founded by the Añangu, an indigenous Kichwa community. As is the case of many Kichwa communities, it had become difficult for the Añangu to maintain their ageless traditions. The Añangu were proud of their culture and at the same time aware of the need to preserve their community’s natural resources.

Fifteen years ago, the Anangu took a giant leap of faith in the sustainable use of natural resources. All hunting and unlimited fishing were stopped. With the help of foreign investors, the Añangu created Napo Wildlife Center as an ecotourism destination showcasing the wonders of their Amazonia as well as the lifestyle, traditions and beliefs of their culture. For two years, the community’s men and women built the entire lodge, transporting all of the materials by boat, foot and canoe.

Today the community dedicates itself to offering an Amazon jungle experience where all flora and fauna are respected and preserved for all to appreciate, learn from and enjoy.

Your personal journey begins with a 30-minute flight to the riverside city of Coca. After a short drive to the dock, a motorized canoe will take explorers on a beautiful 2-hour adventure on the grand Napo River. Upon arrival at the entrance to Napo Wildlife Center, guests will switch to smaller, dugout canoes.

The final 2-hour canoe ride is breathtaking. Quietly your guide will paddle up a blackwater creek to the secluded lodge. Upon your arrival, you will be greeted by lodge staff and escorted to your cabana to settle in. Your adventure awaits! You will come to understand and appreciate the respect the indigenous people have for nature by participating in many exciting activities, observe an abundance of flora and fauna.
